Know your engine

What does a timing chain do — and why does it wear?

A timing chain keeps the crankshaft and camshaft(s) perfectly synchronised, using metal links instead of rubber. Chains were traditionally seen as a “fit and forget” part, but many modern engines are known to suffer from chain stretch, worn guides and tensioner failure — sometimes well within the engine’s normal life.

As the chain wears, its links elongate slightly and it develops slack. That slack throws off valve timing, causes rattling noises, and puts extra strain on the plastic guides that keep the chain aligned — which can themselves break and drop debris into the engine.

Warning signs

Signs your timing chain needs attention

Timing chain wear develops gradually, then can fail suddenly. If you notice any of the following, get your car checked at NMD Automotive as soon as possible.

Rattling on cold start

A metallic rattle or clatter for a second or two after starting, which fades as oil pressure builds.

Dashboard warning lights

Engine management lights can indicate the camshaft and crankshaft have drifted out of sync.

Metal debris in the oil

Fine metal or plastic particles from worn chain guides showing up at an oil change.

Rough or unstable idle

A shaky, uneven idle caused by valve timing drifting out of specification.

Loss of power

Reduced performance or hesitant acceleration as timing accuracy degrades.

High mileage, no history

If you’re unsure whether the chain has ever been checked, it’s worth a look.

A rattle that clears after a few seconds might seem harmless — but it’s usually the earliest warning a timing chain gives before more serious symptoms appear. Catching it early is far cheaper than an engine rebuild.

Listen: a timing chain cold-start rattle

This is a simulated example of the sharp metallic rattle a worn timing chain can make for a second or two on start-up, before it quietens as oil pressure builds.

Common questions

Timing chain replacement FAQs

Answers to the questions we’re asked most often by drivers in Whitstable and across Kent.

What does a timing chain do?
A timing chain keeps the crankshaft and camshaft(s) precisely synchronised so the engine’s valves open and close at the right moment. Unlike a timing belt, it’s made of metal links and usually runs inside the engine, lubricated by oil.
Do timing chains need replacing?
Timing chains were once considered a “lifetime” part, but many modern engines are known to suffer from chain stretch, worn guides and tensioner failure well before the rest of the engine wears out. Left unchecked, this can lead to poor running, engine damage, or complete failure.
Which cars have known timing chain problems?
Timing chain issues are well documented on BMW N47 and N57 diesel engines, Vauxhall, Renault and Nissan 1.6 CDTI/dCi diesels, VW Group EA888 1.8 and 2.0 TSI/TFSI petrol engines, and MINI/BMW N13 and N18 petrol engines, among others. If you’re unsure about your car, call NMD Automotive and we’ll check for you.
What are the signs of a failing timing chain?
Common signs include a rattling or clattering noise on cold start-up that fades as oil pressure builds, a rough or hesitant idle, engine warning lights, and reduced performance. Any of these should be checked promptly, as chain failure can cause serious engine damage.
What happens if a timing chain snaps or jumps?
If a timing chain snaps or skips teeth on the sprockets, the pistons and valves can collide, causing bent valves, damaged pistons and, in serious cases, a written-off engine. Replacing a worn chain in good time is far cheaper than repairing the damage caused by failure.
How much does timing chain replacement cost?
Cost varies by make, model and how accessible the timing chain is, since some engines need significantly more labour than others. Contact NMD Automotive in Whitstable for a free, no-obligation quote for your specific vehicle.
How long does a timing chain replacement take?
Timing chain jobs vary widely by engine, from around a day to several days on more complex layouts. We’ll give you an accurate timescale once we’ve inspected your vehicle.
Do you offer a warranty on timing chain replacement work?
Yes. We fit manufacturer-approved chains, guides and tensioners and stand behind our workmanship. Ask our team for full warranty details when you book your timing chain replacement.
