Why come to a garage for tyres rather than a tyre shop?
A dedicated tyre shop fits tyres. That’s their job, and they do it well. But a tyre is only one part of a system — it connects to a wheel, which connects to suspension, which connects to steering geometry. When you come to NMD for tyres, we’re looking at the whole picture.
If a tyre is wearing unevenly, a new one will wear the same way unless the cause is found. That might be alignment, a worn suspension bush, a sticking calliper, or incorrect pressures that nobody checked. We find the cause first, then fit the tyre — so the new rubber actually lasts.
We also carry out 4-wheel alignment on the same ramp, on the same visit. No second appointment, no separate trip to another garage. Tyres and alignment done together, properly, in one go.
Budget, mid-range or premium — honest advice on which to choose
We supply tyres at every price point and won’t push you towards the most expensive option if it doesn’t make sense for your vehicle and your mileage. Here’s how we’d typically advise.
Good value, sensible choice
Perfectly adequate for lower-mileage cars, second vehicles, and situations where the tyres will be replaced before they’re worn out anyway. Modern budget tyres are significantly better than they were ten years ago.
Best balance for most drivers
Noticeably better grip, noise levels and longevity than budget options. For most people doing a normal mix of town and motorway driving, mid-range is where the best value sits — you’ll get more miles and better wet-weather performance per pound spent.
Best performance, longest life
Shorter braking distances, lower road noise, better fuel economy and the longest tread life. If you’re driving a performance vehicle, doing high motorway mileage, or just want the best rubber under your car, this is the tier.
Signs your tyres need replacing
Some of these are instant failures on an MOT. Others are warning signs that replacement is due soon. Either way, if you’re not sure, we’ll check them for free and give you an honest answer.
Tread depth below 3mm
The legal minimum is 1.6mm, but grip — particularly in wet conditions — deteriorates significantly below 3mm. At 1.6mm, stopping distances in the wet can be double what they are on new tyres.
Uneven wear patterns
Wear on one edge, feathering across the tread, or a smooth centre strip. These all point to an underlying issue — alignment, pressure, or suspension — that should be addressed before the new tyre goes on.
Cracking or bulges
Cracks in the sidewall (from age or UV exposure) and bulges (from impact damage) are structural failures. A tyre with a bulge can blow out without warning. Replace immediately.
Age — over 5 years old
Even if the tread looks fine, rubber degrades with age. Tyres over five years old start losing grip and flexibility. Over ten years, they should be replaced regardless of tread depth.
Vibration or noise
A tyre that’s developed a flat spot, lost its balance weight, or has internal damage will vibrate or drone at speed. This can mask or accelerate other problems if left.
Puncture in the wrong place
A puncture in the central tread area can usually be repaired safely. A puncture in the sidewall, shoulder, or close to a previous repair generally means replacement. We’ll assess it honestly.

Old tyre removal and disposal
Your old tyres are removed and disposed of responsibly. If there’s unusual wear, we’ll show you and explain what caused it so the new ones don’t go the same way.
New tyre fitted and balanced
Each tyre is mounted on the wheel, inflated to the correct pressure for your vehicle, and balanced on our wheel balancer to eliminate vibration at speed.
Valve check or replacement
Rubber valves deteriorate over time and can cause slow leaks. We check yours and replace if needed — it’s a small part that causes a disproportionate number of flat-tyre callouts.
Pressure set to manufacturer spec
Not a generic number — the correct pressure for your specific vehicle, load, and tyre size. This is printed on the door sill or fuel flap of most vehicles, and it matters for wear, grip and fuel economy.
Visual suspension and brake check
While the wheel is off, we do a quick visual check of the brake pads, discs, and suspension components. If anything needs attention, we’ll let you know — no obligation.

New tyres? Get the alignment checked at the same time
This is the single most effective thing you can do to protect a tyre investment. If your alignment is even slightly out, new tyres will begin wearing unevenly from the first mile — and you won’t notice until the damage is done.
We carry out full 4-wheel laser alignment in-house, measuring toe, camber and caster on all four wheels and adjusting to manufacturer specification. Most garages in the area only offer front-axle tracking — we measure all four corners, because the rear geometry affects everything in front of it.
We can do tyres and alignment in a single visit, on the same ramp, with one appointment. It’s the obvious combination, and we’d always recommend it.
